6. My Priorities Are Changing

My Priorities Are Changing

When the things that once mattered no longer matter in quite the same way.

Change Is Not Always Visible At First

There are moments in life when the change is not immediately obvious.

Your circumstances may remain largely the same.

Your responsibilities may remain the same.

Your relationships may remain the same.

Yet something about your relationship with those things begins to shift.

What once felt important no longer carries the same weight.

What once motivated you no longer creates the same energy.

What once seemed urgent now feels less significant.

When Old Motivations Begin To Change

At first this can be confusing.

We often assume that our priorities are fixed.

That what mattered yesterday should continue to matter tomorrow.

Yet human beings do not remain unchanged.

As we grow, learn, experience, succeed, fail, gain, lose, and adapt, our relationship with life evolves.

Sometimes priorities change because circumstances change.

Sometimes priorities change because we change.

The challenge is that we often notice the consequences before we understand the cause.

You may find yourself less interested in goals that once consumed your attention.

You may feel less motivated by achievements that once seemed important.

You may feel increasingly drawn towards things that previously sat at the edge of your awareness.

The Tension Of Changing Priorities

This can create uncertainty.

Particularly when your existing life was built around a previous set of priorities.

Part of you may wonder whether something is wrong.

Part of you may feel guilty for changing.

Part of you may try to force yourself back into old motivations.

Yet not every shift in priorities is a problem.

Sometimes changing priorities are signs of development.

Sometimes they reflect new understanding.

Sometimes they indicate that a previous stage of life is coming to completion.

When The New Priorities Are Not Yet Clear

The difficulty is that the new priorities are not always clear.

The old ones begin to loosen their grip before the new ones fully emerge.

For a while you may feel caught between two ways of living.

One that feels familiar.

One that feels unfinished.

One that reflects who you have been.

One that reflects who you may be becoming.

This can feel uncomfortable.

It can also be valuable.

What Changing Priorities May Reveal

Changing priorities often reveal changing values.

Changing values often reveal changing identity.

And changing identity is often part of the process of becoming.

You may not yet know exactly what matters most.

You may simply know that what mattered before no longer fits in the same way.

That awareness may be the beginning of something important.

Reflection

What feels less important than it once did?

What seems to matter more than it used to?

What are you giving your attention to now?

What no longer feels worth the energy it once required?

What keeps drawing your attention despite your attempts to ignore it?

What values seem to be changing?

What if these changes are not distractions?

What if they are clues?

What’s Becoming Of Me

Many questions about changing priorities eventually become questions about becoming.

Not:

How do I make myself care about the same things again?

But:

What is beginning to matter now, and what might that reveal about who I am becoming?

That question sits at the heart of What’s Becoming Of Me.
